Although the sun was shining it was still rather chilly when the first players teed-off for the 2025 Houldsworth Cup at Disley Golf Club. This was the fifth time since 1966 that Disley GC had hosted the Houldsworth Cup. It was the third time in recent years that the Houldsworth had been held in May rather than June. The format of the competition had been changed in 2023 to a Better Ball Stableford
Unlike recent years, there were no early leader setting the pace, and it was not until the return of the 8.50 am partnership of local members, Steve Misell and Pete Zadoroshnyj, that we saw a score of 41 points. Steve M is a past winner of the Balfour Cup, when it was played at Disley in 2011, and he has just retired as the Captain of Manchester Captains. Was this to be the year when he and his partner won the Houldsworth Cup, to add to his collection of famous memories?
Alas no! Some ninety minutes later, David Conville and Paul McCallum of Houldsworth GC also returned with 41 points, and this was to take top place on the Leader Board on a CPO. The next pairing of Neil Coverly and Joe Lovatt of Sicklehome GC, also came back with 41 points to claim second place at that time on a CPO.
In fact there was something of a glut of 41 points scored by the pairs who went out over the latter part of the morning, including Dave Berry and Gary Taylor of Bury GC and Andrew Sweeney and Stuart Cunningham of Disley GC.
It must have been the afternoon sunshine, which inspired Andrew Quinn- Williams and Chris Waldron of Disley GC to raise the bar to 46 points. Phillip Clark and Dave Stanway also of Disley GC put in a challenge, but were 2 point short of the new target.
So our early leaders, Steve Misell and Pete Zadoroshnyj saw their 41 points beaten on CPOs by 5 other 41 points and in the end had to settle for 8th place.
The 2025 Houldsworth Cup was awarded to Andrew Quinn-Williams & Chris Waldron of Disley Golf Club with 46 points. Disley Club Captain Phillip Clarke and Disley President Dave Stanway took second place with 44 points.
At the Presentation the B&H President, Keith Dingle, thanked the Disley Captain Phillip Clarke for all that they had done
to promote the Houldsworth competition and the welcome which had been given to players on the day.
Keith went on to thank the B&H committee members for all the work undertaken in the organisation and running of the day's competition.
B&H Chaiman John Farmer and B&H President Keith Dingley present the Houldworth Cup
to the 2025 winners Andrew Quinn-Williams & Chris Waldron of Disley Golf Club with 46 points.
Clasping one of the much coveted B&H ties, which are now presented to winners,
Andrew Quinn-Williams explained
that it was one of those days when everything just went into the hole and how delighted, and maybe a touch surprised,
they were to be the winners of the 2025 Houldsworth Cup.
Disley Club Captain Phillip Clarke and Disley President Dave Stanway took second place with 44 points.
David Conville and Paul McCallum of Houldsworth GC had taken top place on the Leader Board earlier in the day.
They could not come back for the Presentation, so it was decided to take a "just in case photo"
and in the end they had to settle for 3rd place with the best of the 41s on a CPO
Stuart Cunningham and Andrew Sweeney of Disley GC took 4th place
with the second best of the 41s on a CPO
B&H President Keit Dingle once again thanked the Disley President for the hospitality shown to both Committee members and players
by all the DGC staff. He presented the Disley President Dave Stanway with a cheque made payable to Disley Golf Club
and thanked the club for hosting the 2025 Houldsworth Cup.
A total of £1,050 in Pro shop vouchers was awarded to the winners to share
