It was 106 years since Bury golf club had hosted the GS Lancashire Cup, way back in 1929, when the man himself, George S Lancashire, may well have been playing in the Competition!
Compared with recent years the number of entries for the 2025 GS Lancs at Bury GC was relatively low. We had 76 players from 16 different clubs. Most players (11) were members of Crompton and Royton GC, which had hosted last year's GS Lancs. Worsley members were in second place with 10 members, while Bury & Stand GCs each has 9 players. Burnley put in two teams, one of which would win the day!
The weather was slightly chilly compared with recent weeks, but things had warmed up somewhat because the first players did not go out unil 10.50 am. Bury Captain, Kevin Speight's team were first out and returned a score of 80 points.
Their score was bettered by a team from Burnley led by Maureen Barson, who only 40 minutes later came back with 82 points.
An hour later a team with players from 3 different clubs, let by Stephen Cooney of Bury GC also returned a score of 80 points. On a CPO they pushed the Bury Captain's team back into 3rd place.
That is how it stood for the rest of the day, with only the Worsley and Heyrose team putting in a near challenging score of 78 points in the early afternoon.
The Bury Golf Club Captain Kevin Speight thanked all those who had taken part in the competition, and in particular those who had stayed or returned for the Presentation.
On behalf of the B&H Competitions Committee, Keith Dingley expressed his thanks to Bury Golf Club for hosting the competition and for the excellent services provided to players on the course and in the Club House. He also thanked the B&H Committee Members for organising and managing the 2025 GS Lancs.
On behalf of the B&H Committee, Keith Dingley presented a cheque to Mr Captain
in appreciation of the excellent and enthusiastic way that all at Bury Golf hosted the 2025 GS Lancs.
The Tee-sheet is now open for those who would like to secure their preferred times.
